Nubrella to be featured in upcoming Hammacher Schlemmer’s Father’s Day catalog.
Headquartered in Boca Raton, FL, the company is the holder of a “patent pending” technology of a new weather protection gear “umbrella”. Nubrella was designed and engineered by Continuum, one of the leading product design and engineering companies in the US (Business Week 2006).
The Story
Back in December of 2002, Alan Kaufman (inventor and founder) was standing in one of his wireless stores in lower Manhattan. On this day the weather was very windy, rainy and down right miserable. Mr. Kaufman began to observe people’s umbrellas inverting and the constant struggles to maintain their umbrella in the proper position. It was at that moment an image popped into the mind of this inventor. Immediately he ran over to a desk and drew that image and thus nubrella was born!
“I never planned on inventing a product I just noticed a problem and came up with a solution” Alan Kaufman.
Alan then began the long task of developing a product. After 5 years and 6 trips to China nubrella finally became a reality in late 2007. Just about everyone that sees nubrella has the same response, “wow” or “that’s ingenious”. “If I knew back then how difficult it was I probably never would have pursued this, it feels like climbing a mountain on roller blades”.
The timing couldn’t be better: It has been suggested that “global warming” has led to an increased amount of severe weather conditions around the world. Call it a cycle or call it science but at the present time we seem to be facing stronger storms and more frequent extreme conditions. In today’s world, weather is probably the second most discussed topic behind security. As a reporter from the Boston Globe recently stated after seeing an early prototype of nubrella at the design firm Continuum, “the industry is ripe for innovation”.
Alan's Bio
Alan is originally from the Boston area. Alan attended Purdue University majoring in Marketing and received a 4 year scholarship for his tennis credentials. After a brief professional tennis career Alan founded Harvard Cellular Communications. HCC was one of Cingular Wireless’ leading authorized dealers throughout the greater Boston metropolitan area. In early 2002 HCC expanded into New York and became Cingular’s largest store operator in Manhattan. When not working Alan can be found on the links as a very avid golfer and lover of the game. Alan also has aspirations of beginning a charitable organization he calls “the real no child left behind” once he gets nubrella off the ground.
